A passionate advocate for Contemporary music, and praised for her ‘great skill’ (Globe and Mail ), ‘strong presence’ (Peterborough Examiner ), and ‘beautiful tone and control’ (The Chronicle-Herald ), soprano Brooke Dufton has sung for such organizations as Soundstreams, Arraymusic, Talisker Players, Toronto’s New Music Concerts, and in festivals including Luminato, the Scotia Festival of Music, Stratford Summer Music, Open Ears, and numerous Nuit Blanche events.
A creative and collaborative artist, she has worked directly with many of the leading composers in Canada. She has premiered roles and pieces, many written for her, by numerous Canadian composers, including John Beckwith, Alexander Rapoport, and Norbert Palej. Brooke’s affinity for the work of R. Murray Schafer in particular has resulted in leading roles in many of his operas, and frequent performances of his works in concert. She was also a founding member of the multidisciplinary ensemble SoundShow, which produced original devised installation works in unique sites across Ontario.
In addition to her work in new music, Brooke is an active performer of traditional repertoire and early music. She has been featured on the CBC both for her performances of Schafer’s ecological music, and for her performance as Anima in a fully-staged production of Bingen’s Ordo Virtutum.
Brooke is a dedicated teacher, with over twenty years’ experience. She holds a doctorate in Vocal Performance specializing in vocal pedagogy, maintains a private studio, and adjudicates regularly. She has taught and guest lectured for a number of institutions, including the Glenn Gould School; the University of Toronto, where she was nominated for a teaching award; and Mount Allison University, where she was also the director of the Opera ensembles.
